DEADBEATS INTERVIEW: um..
With DeadRocks V LESS THAN 2 WEEKS AWAY, we wanted to interview some artists we’re bringing along - starting with um.. ! Ben and Dylan, two chill dudes from California with two releases on Deadbeats bring a fresh, unique sound to the label. In their own words, they make "weird sounds". Their latest Deadbeats release, “nothin’ to say” is a fun, percussion based track with distorted sound effects - comprising a track which is definitely weird but in the best way possible. We can’t wait to see them take the stage at DeadRocks V! Keep reading to get to know um..
When did you play your first set and where? What was it like?
Ben: I played a dubstep set on a college radio station in Boston in 2011 while I was attending Berklee College of Music. I’m fairly certain no one was listening.
Dylan: I think my first time DJing was at a college party in San Luis Obispo around 2010 or 2011. All the walls were covered in black garbage bags and neon paint was everywhere and the house was completely full of drunk college kids on all levels. I had no idea what I was doing and I’m sure it was terrible but I had a great time.
If you were a dog what type of dog would you be and why?
Ben: not sure. Ask me again if they ever release a dog RPG.
Dylan: I know we've answered this before, but I can't remember what i said last time. I'll say papillon for now. I don’t really have a reason, I just like them.
What is your favourite touring or performing memory?
Ben: I remember we played some really random festival for a fourth of July benefit or something. We were playing on a tiny side stage with basically blown out speakers to a bunch of our friends from icon collective because it was an icon showcase stage. everyone was having a surprisingly good time given the circumstances. One of my favorite sets we’ve every played.
Dylan: It's hard to pick a favorite, but some of the early shows of our career we drove around the midwest with my sister who was managing us at the time. we didn't have much experience at all, and we were playing shows in new places every night it was great. Another would be Shambhala last year which was the best weekend of my life.
What can we expect from your set at DeadRocks V?
Ben: a good time I hope. We’re grateful for the opportunity to share that awesome stage with some awesome artists that inspired both of us back in the day.
Dylan: New music and all that. we're not really sure what else, we usually just figure it out onthe fly or talk through some basic structure beforehand. We don't plan our sets. My dad's coming out to that show so that's exciting.
What is the most annoying thing in the world?
Ben: Dylan when he’s hungry
Dylan: Really bad EDM.
We agree with you there Dylan! Catch um.. On July 3rd at DeadRocks V.
